Velázquez paints Las Meninas

What happened

In 1656, Diego Velázquez painted Las Meninas at the Spanish court. The work stages a complex scene of looking, rank, representation and artistic presence. It became one of the most analysed paintings in Western art.

Literary impact

Las Meninas offered later writers a model of self-reflexive art, where viewer, maker and subject are entangled. Its theatrical arrangement parallels literary experiments with perspective, authorship and the instability of appearances.
