In 1664, English forces seized New Amsterdam from the Dutch and renamed it New York. The transfer reflected wider Anglo-Dutch rivalry over trade and empire. The city retained a multilingual, commercial character even under English rule.

New York's layered colonial identity later nourished writing about migration, commerce and urban mixture. Its Dutch, English, African and Indigenous histories gave American literature a complex civic inheritance.
