In 1688, William of Orange invaded England and James II fled. The Glorious Revolution led to a constitutional settlement limiting royal power. It reshaped monarchy, Parliament, religion and political legitimacy in Britain.

The revolution intensified pamphlet debate, satire and party writing. Poets and essayists of the following decades wrote in a culture increasingly divided by Whig and Tory interpretations of liberty, order and inheritance.
