In 1691, the Treaty of Limerick ended the Williamite War in Ireland. It followed Jacobite defeat and promised terms that later became politically contested. The treaty entered Irish memory as a symbol of broken faith and dispossession.

The treaty's aftermath shaped Irish Jacobite poetry, lament and political song. Gaelic and English-language writers returned to exile, confiscation and betrayed promises as central themes in Irish historical imagination.
