In 1693, the College of William and Mary received a royal charter in Virginia. It became the second-oldest institution of higher education in what is now the United States. The college served Anglican, colonial and elite educational purposes.

The college strengthened the learned culture of colonial Virginia and the Chesapeake. Its classical curriculum helped shape the rhetoric, prose and political language of later American public writers.
