Between 1695 and 1697, Pierre Bayle published his Historical and Critical Dictionary. The work combined biography, scepticism, erudite notes and controversial argument. It became a major resource for Enlightenment readers across Europe.

Bayle's footnote-rich method encouraged irony, sceptical inquiry and learned prose that questioned inherited authority. His dictionary influenced philosophes, essayists and poets who treated knowledge as contested rather than settled.
