The Treaty of Karlowitz ends the Great Turkish War
What happened
The Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in 1699 after the Great Turkish War. The Ottoman Empire ceded significant territories to the Habsburgs, Poland-Lithuania and Venice. The treaty marked a major shift in power in south-eastern Europe.
Literary impact
Karlowitz changed European representations of Ottoman power from dread to decline. Travel writing, epic celebration and political verse used the treaty to frame changing relations between Christian Europe and the Islamic Ottoman world.
