In 1700, the Berlin Academy of Sciences was founded with the support of Frederick I of Prussia and the intellectual influence of Leibniz. It promoted research in science, mathematics and scholarship. The institution signalled Prussia's ambition to join Europe's learned republic.

Academies helped define Enlightenment prose, learned correspondence and the prestige of rational inquiry. Their culture influenced poets and critics who increasingly measured literature against knowledge, utility and public improvement.
