In 1704, The Boston News-Letter began publication. It became the first continuously published newspaper in British North America. The paper offered colonial readers a regular supply of local, imperial and foreign news.

A stable newspaper press helped form a colonial public sphere for essays, poems, advertisements and political argument. It prepared the ground for the print networks that later sustained revolutionary writing.
