What happened
In 1711, Alexander Pope published An Essay on Criticism while still a young poet. The poem distilled neoclassical principles of judgement, wit, nature and decorum. Its polished couplets quickly established Pope as a major literary voice.

The poem became a handbook of Augustan taste and heroic couplet technique. Pope's aphoristic brilliance influenced English poetic diction, satire and criticism for much of the eighteenth century.
