In 1717, four London lodges formed the Premier Grand Lodge of England. This event is often treated as the beginning of organised modern Freemasonry. The movement spread through sociable networks across Europe and the Atlantic world.

Freemasonry created rituals, songs, symbols and ideals of brotherhood that entered eighteenth-century literary culture. Its lodges connected writers, printers and reformers interested in sociability, secrecy and moral improvement.
