In 1721, the Treaty of Nystad ended the Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia. Russia gained Baltic territories and emerged as a major European power. Sweden's era as a dominant Baltic empire effectively ended.

Russia's rise shifted the cultural map of Europe and strengthened the world that later produced imperial Russian literature. Swedish and Finnish memory also absorbed the loss of great-power status into historical writing and song.
