In 1732, King George II granted a charter for the colony of Georgia. Founded under James Oglethorpe's trusteeship, it was imagined as a buffer against Spanish Florida and a social experiment for debtors and the poor. It later became a plantation colony.

Georgia's founding added another regional voice to colonial American writing. Its idealistic rhetoric, frontier conflict and later slave economy gave writers material for reflecting on reform, failure and empire.
