In 1741, George Frideric Handel composed Messiah in a remarkably short period. The oratorio set a scriptural libretto compiled by Charles Jennens. It presented Christian salvation history through recitative, aria and chorus rather than staged drama.

Messiah shows how biblical language could be reorganised into a poetic-musical arc of prophecy, suffering and triumph. Its choruses helped fix scriptural phrases in English cultural memory through music.
