In 1753, Parliament established the British Museum, based largely on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane. It became one of the world's first public national museums. The institution gathered books, manuscripts, natural specimens and antiquities.

The museum strengthened antiquarian study, manuscript culture and the public idea of national knowledge. Poets and scholars gained new access to objects and texts that fed historical imagination and classical revival.
