In 1753, Carl Linnaeus published Species Plantarum. The work listed plant species using binomial nomenclature and became a starting point for modern botanical naming. It made classification more stable and internationally usable.

Botanical naming changed the language of flowers, gardens and natural description. Poets could now draw on both folk symbolism and scientific precision when writing about plant life.
