In 1768, the first edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica began publication in Edinburgh. It was issued in parts and completed in 1771. The project reflected Scottish Enlightenment confidence in ordered, accessible knowledge.

Britannica helped make encyclopaedic knowledge part of everyday literate culture. Its Edinburgh origins connect it to the same intellectual climate that nourished philosophy, history, criticism and poetry in Scotland.
