In 1772, the English court decision in Somerset v Stewart held that an enslaved man could not be forcibly removed from England and sold abroad. The ruling did not abolish slavery across the empire. It nevertheless became a landmark for abolitionist argument.

The case strengthened the moral and legal language used by abolitionist writers. Poets and pamphleteers drew on such moments to challenge slavery and expose contradictions in British liberty.
