After prolonged blockade, bombardment and severe shortages, the Royalist city of Chester surrendered to Parliament in February 1646. Its population had endured damaged buildings, hunger and disrupted trade. The city's fall severed an important royal connection with North Wales and the Irish Sea.

Chester's experience survives in civic records and eyewitness writing that document war from inside a besieged community. Such accounts complicate heroic battle poetry with hunger, ruined streets and civilian exhaustion.
