What happened
The Act of Uniformity took effect in England on St Bartholomew's Day, 24 August 1662. Roughly two thousand ministers who would not conform to the restored Church of England lost their livings. Their removal reshaped local religious life and consolidated a distinct Nonconformist culture.
Literary impact
Ejected ministers produced sermons, spiritual autobiographies, prison writing and devotional verse outside the established Church. The persecution of dissent formed the world of writers such as John Bunyan and preserved Civil War religious arguments for later generations.
