The Royal Society receives its first charter
What happened
In 1662, the Royal Society of London received a royal charter from Charles II. It promoted experimental science, observation and the exchange of knowledge. Its motto, Nullius in verba, signalled suspicion of mere authority.
Literary impact
The Royal Society encouraged a plain prose style and a new prestige for experiment. Poets from Dryden to later Romantics responded to scientific language, sometimes celebrating discovery and sometimes fearing imaginative loss.
