During the brutal urban house-to-house fighting at the Battle of Stalingrad, Russia, the Soviet Red Army deployed the SN-42 (Stalnoi Nagrudnik) steel breastplate to elite assault engineers. Composed of two overlapping plates of 2mm thick carburized steel, this torso shield was impervious to standard German MP40 submachine gun rounds at close range and offered superb defense against grenade splinters. It gave assault teams a critical edge when clearing heavily fortified buildings.

The heavy steel-breasted assault engineer became an iconic heroic figure within Soviet World War II state poetry and socialist realist literature. Poets like Konstantin Simonov captured this industrial grit, framing the armored soldier as the unbreakable iron shield of the Soviet motherland.
