Poet involved
What happened
On 19 January 1942, La Cantate du Narcisse, using Valéry's text and music by Germaine Tailleferre, was premiered in Marseille by the Orchestre de la Radio under Jean Giardino. The work grew from Valéry's continuing interest in the Narcissus myth. Its performance extended his poetry into a major collaborative musical form.
Literary impact
The cantata returned Valéry to one of his earliest and most persistent poetic subjects while demonstrating the adaptability of his verse to music. The collaboration also linked his mature poetic concerns with the French musical culture of the twentieth century.
