In 1697 Charles Perrault published Histoires ou contes du temps passé, often associated with the subtitle Tales of Mother Goose. The collection included literary versions of stories such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and Puss in Boots. It brought oral and salon storytelling into print at the end of the seventeenth century.

Perrault's collection is a landmark in the movement of folk narrative from spoken tradition into elite literary culture. These tales shaped later children's literature, Romantic folklore studies, opera, ballet, and modern fantasy.
