The Treaty of Ryswick ends the Nine Years' War
What happened
In 1697, the Treaty of Ryswick ended the Nine Years' War between France and a European coalition. Louis XIV recognised William III as king of England. The settlement temporarily checked French expansion but left many imperial and dynastic tensions unresolved.
Literary impact
The treaty shaped the political world of late Stuart and early Augustan writers. Poets and satirists worked in a climate of war finance, diplomacy, party rivalry and suspicion of French power.
