In 1523 Pope Clement VII commissioned Michelangelo to design the Laurentian Library in Florence. The project housed the Medici collection of manuscripts and displayed books as instruments of dynastic prestige. Its architecture made reading, scholarship and power visibly inseparable.

The library reminds poetry readers that Renaissance literature depended on spaces of preservation as well as authorship. Manuscripts, commentaries and classical texts survived because patrons turned collections into cultural monuments.
