In 1523 Martin Luther published his German translation of the Pentateuch as part of his Old Testament work. The translation aimed at clarity, rhythm and idiomatic force rather than scholastic distance. It helped build a shared written German for worship, reading and argument.

Luther's biblical language deeply shaped German poetry, hymnody and prose. His translation demonstrated that a vernacular could carry sacred authority, narrative grandeur and memorable phrasing for ordinary hearers and readers.
