Gil Vicente's Farsa de Inês Pereira was first performed in 1523 in Portugal. The play uses comic domestic intrigue, proverbs and lively speech to expose social ambition and gendered expectations. It drew on popular performance traditions while speaking to a courtly audience.

Vicente's drama preserves voices often absent from official history: servants, women, fools and ordinary talkers. Its comic method shaped Iberian theatre by bringing oral humour and everyday language into literary form.
