Poet involved

What happened

Andrew Marvell was elected member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull in 1659 during the unstable final phase of the English Commonwealth. He was already a poet of remarkable range, from metaphysical lyric to political verse. His parliamentary role placed him inside the crisis that led to the Restoration.

Literary impact

Marvell's career joins lyric subtlety with public service and satire. His poems and later prose show how a writer could survive regime change while meditating on liberty, conscience and political compromise.
