Jón Magnússon Completes the Píslarsaga in Iceland
What happened
The Icelandic pastor Jón Magnússon completed his Píslarsaga, or Story of My Sufferings, in 1659. The work described alleged witchcraft persecution and personal torment in a remote Lutheran society. It belongs to a northern tradition where saga memory, legal testimony and religious autobiography overlapped.
Literary impact
The Píslarsaga is a powerful example of marginal life writing outside major European capitals. It preserves oral accusation, fear and local belief in prose shaped by older Icelandic narrative habits.
