What happened
Harvard College was founded in 1636 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was established to educate clergy and civic leaders in a Puritan society. The college became the oldest institution of higher learning in what is now the United States.
Literary impact
Harvard anchored a learned culture of sermons, disputations, Latin verse and printed scholarship in New England. Its educational influence helped form the intellectual environment of early American poets and ministers.
