In 1683, Ottoman forces besieged Vienna but were defeated by a coalition led by the Polish king John III Sobieski. The battle marked a major turning point in Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry. It began a period of Habsburg advances in central Europe.

The siege became a source of heroic poetry, sermons, songs and political myth across Europe. It also hardened literary images of East and West, shaping both triumphalist Christian narratives and later reflections on cultural encounter.
