Qing China annexes Taiwan

What happened

In 1683, Qing forces defeated the Kingdom of Tungning and brought Taiwan under Qing rule. The island became formally incorporated into the Qing imperial order. The change affected migration, administration and relations with Indigenous communities.

Literary impact

Taiwan's incorporation shaped frontier writing, gazetteers and regional accounts in Chinese. Such texts recorded landscapes, peoples and customs while also revealing the limits and biases of imperial description.
