In 1690, Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick was printed in Boston. It is often described as the first multi-page newspaper published in the Americas. Authorities suppressed it after a single issue because it lacked approval.

The paper revealed both the appetite for news and the power of censorship in colonial print culture. Newspapers later became essential to poems, essays, satire and political mobilisation in British America.
