In 1734, Voltaire's Letters on the English appeared in France and caused scandal. The work praised English religious tolerance, science and political institutions while implicitly criticising France. It helped spread Anglophile and Enlightenment ideas.

Voltaire used comparison as a literary weapon against censorship and intolerance. His lively prose influenced philosophical essays, satirical poetry and the cosmopolitan style of Enlightenment debate.
