George Cayley engraved and described the essential layout of a modern aeroplane around 1799, separating lift, propulsion, and control. His fixed wing, fuselage, and tail concept broke decisively with flapping-wing fantasies. This was one of the key theoretical foundations for later manned gliders and powered aeroplanes.
