Parliament abolished the Court of Star Chamber in London through legislation receiving royal assent in July 1641. The court had become associated with political prosecution, corporal punishment and censorship under Charles I. Its removal dismantled a major instrument of prerogative government.

The collapse of Star Chamber controls contributed to a dramatic expansion in unlicensed printing. Pamphlets, prophecies, poems and radical religious arguments reached audiences that had previously been difficult to address openly.
