Descartes publishes Meditations on First Philosophy

What happened

In 1641, René Descartes published Meditations on First Philosophy in Latin. The work explored doubt, the existence of God and the distinction between mind and body. It became a central text of modern philosophy.

Literary impact

The Meditations intensified literary interest in inwardness and the solitary thinking self. Later poets and prose writers responded to Cartesian dualism by exploring divided consciousness, embodiment and the limits of reason.
