First Agreement of the People
What happened
Civilian Levellers and sympathetic soldiers produced the first Agreement of the People in London in October 1647. It proposed a written constitutional settlement based upon more representative parliaments, equality before the law and religious liberty. Army radicals pressed their commanders to adopt its principles.
Literary impact
The Agreement exemplified the plain, persuasive political prose created by the revolution's expanded reading public. Its language gave ordinary soldiers and tradespeople a durable place within the literature of constitutional liberty.
