Around 1647, George Fox began the preaching that led to the Religious Society of Friends, known as Quakers. The movement emphasised inward light, plain speech and direct spiritual experience. It grew amid the religious ferment of the English Civil War period.

Quaker testimony encouraged journals, spiritual autobiography and plain-style devotional prose. Its suspicion of ornament and hierarchy influenced later reform writing, prison narratives and poetry grounded in conscience.
