The Engagement between Charles I and the Scottish Engagers

What happened

Charles I secretly concluded the Engagement with Scottish commissioners at Carisbrooke Castle in December 1647. He promised a temporary Presbyterian settlement in England in return for a Scottish army restoring him to power. The agreement helped provoke the Second English Civil War.

Literary impact

Disclosure of the Engagement confirmed Parliamentarian claims that Charles could not be trusted in negotiation. Polemicists increasingly portrayed renewed warfare as evidence that lasting peace required judgement upon the king himself.
