Georg Ohm publishes his law of electrical resistance
What happened
In 1827, the German physicist and mathematician Georg Simon Ohm published "Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet" in Cologne. This work established Ohm's law, stating that the current through a conductor is proportional to the voltage and inversely proportional to the resistance, a fundamental relationship governing all electrical circuits. Though initially met with skepticism in Germany, the law was later recognized as one of the most important principles in electrical science and technology.
Literary impact
Ohm's law introduced the concept of "resistance" into the vocabulary of electrical science, a term that would acquire rich metaphorical meanings in German literature of the nineteenth century. The idea that force meets resistance, that flow is impeded by material properties, resonated with literary themes of struggle, obstruction, and the tension between will and circumstance. German Romantic and post-Romantic writers, from Goethe to the young Nietzsche, were deeply engaged with the scientific concepts of their era, and the language of electrical resistance entered the broader cultural lexicon of force and opposition.
