Unsecured Russian Wireless at Tannenberg
What happened
During Russia's invasion of East Prussia, the First and Second Armies transmitted operational messages by radio without adequate encryption. German commanders intercepted reports revealing Russian movements and the poor coordination between Generals Rennenkampf and Samsonov. The intelligence contributed to Russia's devastating defeat at Tannenberg.
Literary impact
The battle entered German nationalist myth and Russian literature of military disaster. Poets such as Alexander Blok and German Expressionists including August Stramm wrote within a war transformed by machines, fragmented messages and the collapse of older heroic forms.
