What happened
Methuen published 'The House at Pooh Corner,' the second and final Winnie-the-Pooh story collection, in London on October 11, 1928, with illustrations by E. H. Shepard. The book introduced the character Tigger and concluded with the elegiac final chapter in which Christopher Robin prepares to leave childhood behind. It was another bestseller and brought the Pooh cycle to a close.
Literary impact
The final chapter's farewell tone — Christopher Robin leaving for school, Pooh not quite understanding — gave the book an unexpected emotional depth and turned the Pooh series into a meditation on the passing of childhood. This valedictory quality has made the book's ending one of the most quoted passages in English children's literature.
