Birth of Brother William Austin Dickinson
Poet involved
What happened
Emily Dickinson's older brother, William Austin Dickinson, was born on April 16, 1829, in Amherst, Massachusetts. Known as Austin, he would become a lawyer and remain a central figure in Emily's life, eventually marrying her close friend Susan Gilbert.
Literary impact
Austin's presence provided Emily with a constant male companion and intellectual sparring partner during her formative years. His marriage to Susan Gilbert in 1856 brought Emily's closest friend into the family as a sister-in-law, creating a domestic triangle that would fuel some of Dickinson's most emotionally charged poetry and letters.
