Dett Departs Hampton Institute After Nearly Two Decades

Poet involved

What happened

Robert Nathaniel Dett ended his long tenure at Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, where he had built the school's choral program into a nationally recognized ensemble since 1913. His departure closed the most productive institutional chapter of his career.

Literary impact

Leaving Hampton freed Dett to pursue new institutional and creative opportunities, including further study and later work at Bennett College. The choral and pedagogical foundations he built there, however, remained his most enduring institutional legacy.
