What happened
In 1917 Nichols published Ardours and Endurances; Also, A Faun’s Holiday and Poems and Phantasies, the volume that made him briefly famous in London and beyond. The book joins trench sequences such as The Assault with pastoral Faun poems written partly while he recovered in England. Robert Graves answered a letter about the Faun piece from the Somme that same year.
Literary impact
The collection fixed his public image as a high-spirited war poet of courage and landscape. Its exalté note is exactly what Sassoon later asked him never to praise again, and it remains the work by which he is chiefly remembered.
