Nichols begins public poetry readings
Poet involved
What happened
After being invalided from France, Nichols began giving public poetry readings in 1917 in Britain. The performances presented the new war poems to large wartime audiences and helped sell Ardours and Endurances. They also prepared the official speaking tour he would undertake in the United States the following year.
Literary impact
Reading aloud made him a platform figure rather than only a page poet. The chanting, public delivery of battle pieces shaped how contemporaries first heard The Assault and related work.
