Nichols joins British propaganda mission to the United States

What happened
In 1918 Nichols travelled to the United States as a member of an official British propaganda mission and gave poetry readings there, including time in New York City. In late November he wrote his introduction to Sassoon’s Counter-Attack in New York. The tour made the young English soldier-poet a transatlantic wartime voice.
Literary impact
American readings widened his audience and placed him as interpreter of British war verse abroad. The New York preface to Sassoon records his own hardened judgment that war degrades rather than ennobles.
