What happened
In April 1918, dating a prefatory note from Bray in England, Nichols issued The Budded Branch, a small Beaumont Press book of poems and a verse fantasy. He said most of the pieces would not be reprinted and that they memorialised an intimacy with Nature which war had destroyed. He now saw Nature as the Great Indifferent.
Literary impact
The preface marks a philosophical shift from pastoral communion to postwar indifference. The book stands between the Faun holiday manner and the bleaker lyric of Aurelia.
